A WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING
by Mike Robinson
If you believe what the Good Book says about Creation and Adam and Eve, then you probably know that the idea of becoming like God was at the heart of the very first temptation.
It went something like this: "Go on, eat the fruit. Eat it and you will be like God. You can be your own god, live your own independent life, make your own decisions, be answerable to no one - especially God - and make your life motto to be, 'I did it my way'!"
From that day to this, the bias of human nature is to be God and to play God. We humans presume to be the ones who make life and death decisions. We have done it with abortion and the beginning of life and we seem determined to do it with euthanasia and the end of life.
And now the news media tells us that progress (?) in genetic engineering has brought us to the point where we can duplicate or clone life. It began with Dolly, the sheep, that was cloned from another sheep. We are now ready (so we are told) to do the same with humans.
"Go on. Just do it! Make the decision. Take the step. Be God". Ah, it's the old, old temptation in a 21st century disguise. If we follow this path I tell you now that Dolly and all that she represents will prove to be a wolf in sheep's clothing.
Yes, the arguments that support cloning will tell us how many benefits will flow from such a practice. The human race will have so much to gain. The advocates of this cloning and genetic engineering will be so persuasive. Their case will be so rational. But no matter how you dress it and disguise it, a wolf remains a wolf and it will eventually act like a wolf. Then let the sheep watch out!
The Good Book likens us to sheep. It tells us that we are like sheep that have gone astray. There is something very vulnerable about sheep. Wolves know it and they know how to exploit it!
