  • Our Journey Through The Valley (73)

    24 February, 2014

There's something else about this prayer of Jesus for Peter that caught my attention. It is expressed in the past tense.  "...but I have prayed for you".   Before Peter even knew there was a "sifting" coming that would engulf him and, maybe to a lesser extent, the other disciples, Jesus had prayed for him.

Nothing catches the Lord of Creation by surprise.

Jesus made it clear that what was to happen to Peter was the outworking of a cosmic, spiritual battle because Satan had asked permission to have him in order to sift him - to "sort him out" if you like.

It seems that the natural world often reflects the supernatural world. What is about to happen to Peter can be explained in natural terms without recourse to the supernatural  world. But Jesus makes it clear that He sees it in the supernatural world and that Satan, having gained permission presumably, is the one orchestrating this test of faith so as to bring Peter down.

One truth we are slowly learning is that heaven and the realm of the Spirit is not "out there" somewhere behind the farthest galaxy. In fact, the whole spiritual realm surrounds us and interacts with the natural, physical world. Most of the time we give no thought to this divine The forces of light and truth are required to stand opposed to Satan. Peter's "trial of faith" (sifting) was part of that intertaction.
